Connection Process

Grid Connection Process

The connection process does differ from State to State, in Queesland it is free to install a new smart digital meter, we will assist you in this process.

  •  The electricity distributor and electricity retailer are not necessarily the same company. Country Energy and Ergon have both retail and distribution arms, for example, whereas Jack Green is a retailer only that may sell electricity in Country Energy Distribution areas. For more information see: The Energy Network Australia's Consumer Guide

  • Prior to the installation, approval for grid connection must typically be sought from the electricity distributor (the owner of the poles and wires) in the area of installation.

  • Once approval is obtained, connection of the solar power system to the grid typically involves further submission of paperwork to the electricity distributor, and sometimes also to the customer's electricity retailer (the company that sells electricity to the customer). This paperwork is issued by a certified electrician stating that the installation is safe.

  • However, the connection process of a solar power system varies by state and by electricity distributor, and sometimes also varies by electricity retailer. The connection procedure also varies from time to time. For these reasons, it is best to learn the precise connection procedure in the relevant area of your installation. The following website can assist BCSE, but information may be outdated – it is best to directly check with the local electricity distributor for their latest requirements, for example Energex.

  • The system may typically be switched on only after the meter is changed over. Depending on the electricity provider, this may occur some weeks after installation, or could be performed on the same day by accredited contractors. In the interim, the solar system will not produce any usable electricity, but will not be damaged.  In some cases (Queensland) if you have an analogue meter your solar power system will be turned on and your meter will essectially spin backwards when you are exporting to the grid, until you recieve your new digital smart meter.

  • Additionally, paperwork must be submitted to claim the  Renewable Energy Certificates/STC's (Solar Credits).

  • There may be some costs of meter changeover incurred by the customer and/or the installer, which do differ from state to state.  Future Sustainability does not charge for this cost.
