Solar Feed In Tarrif Cuts Announced in Western Australia

Feed-in tariffs for rooftop solar in Western Australia have been cut in half – from a net tariff of 40c a kilowatt hour to a net tariff of 20c/kwh – the state government announced in its budget on Thursday. The changes will take effect for applications received from July 1, 2011. The scheme, announced in August last year, has resulted in about 70MW of capacity being installed in just eight months, but will now be capped at 150MW. No tariff will be available from that point.

The Perth-based Sustainable Energy Association said it supported a move to ease back the tariff, but the scale of this decision had taken it by surprise. “Changes to subsidies need to be strategically rolled back to establish a glide path for market development, not coarsely readjusted,” said SEA CEO Ray Wills. The move comes after Horizon Power stopped installing new rooftop solar in Broome and Carnarvon because of capacity constraints on the local grid.
